Daya Harijan is a Kharad manufacturer. He joined his five generations old traditional business of making kharad from goat’s hair.
Earlier, the raw material was available in Gujarat but nowadays, it is imported from Rajasthan. The kharad was used to make mats when plastic was not available. It is also used to make blankets.
They use their own designs on blankets and mats as Daya had not taken any learnings from any institute or organization.
Kharad is an old artwork which is still being practiced by the artisans of India. It was earlier known as Chant which was being used to make mats. These chants were made up of goat’s hair. Nowadays, both mats and blankets are made up of kharad.
2001 earthquake severely affected the kharad business. The people migrated to other places, many left the work and adopted something else to make an earning. As the machines took over the market the kharad market diminished for the next 10 years. Due to reducing demands, the youth is not ready to indulge in this work.
