Karsan Devraj Gordia is the owner of Banni Handicrafts shop and a famous quilt maker from Hodka village. He decided to continue his 5-6 generation old business forward where he used to manufacture bedsheets, cushion covers, quilts, quilts covers with great precision.
They are basically from Rajasthan but got shifted to Gujarat 125 years ago. Earlier, women were not that educated hence, an initiative was taken where the quilt making art was taught to women to get them employed. These quilts were later gifted to them as dowry. Even today, the women in the family also contribute to the work by adding cotton in the quilts after cutting and stitching them.
Earlier, polyester fabric was used to make these quilts which are later replaced with cotton which are embellished with beautiful block print with natural dyes. The quilts are made from recycling the old clothes. The Banni quilts are famous for the property of being warm in winters and cold in summer and can be used life long. Karsan Devraj Gordia sells his products in government exhibitions.
The quilt-making process includes a number of steps starting with spinning cotton and getting the final thread out of it. Then, the pieces are stitched properly to make different layers of the quilt. Following with adding cotton in the quilts and finally stitching them to get the final quilts.
The artisans also use recycled clothes to make the quilts. Where the clothes are first to cut into pieces and then stitched properly. Then, the cotton is added in the quilts which is then completed with final stitching.
