India has witnessed the arrival and depreciation of a lot of art forms, Rogan being one of them. This Persian word was brought in India in the form of a beautiful art form by the Khatris, a Muslim community. The prestigious artwork called Rogan has its roots in history since 300 years ago. The beautifully crafted cloth pieces use varnish or boiled oil for painting on the fabric blended well with the vegetable pigments.
Late in the 20th century, the development of cheap, machine-manufactured textiles took over the market and this traditional Rogan art lost its value. At the time, Rogan art was on the verge of extinction it lost its several talented hands. The Khatri family of Nirona in Kutch - Gujarat is the last one still practicing this art to keep it alive.
Mr. Abdul Gafur Khatri had abandoned his school to take his family's work ahead and bring it the prestige it deserves. The great efforts of the Khatri family with the support of local cooperatives and non-profit organizations resulted in favor of Rogan. Rogan earned its market worldwide through different platforms. The awards describe the hard work and the prestige it has earned. Abdul Gafur Khatri is a national awardee for the talent he restrains.
